\"\"Whilst designing in the kitchen I was listening to BBC Radio 6 Music and a guest on the show was talking about the famous 1970's exploding whale. I was intrigued and started to take notice of the story unfolding, a very funny one at that.<\/p>

It all happened on a beach in Oregon in 1970. A beached whale which had sadly died on the sand was too large to move, so they decided to blow it up with TNT. The person in charge of setting the explosives was told only to use a small amount, but he didn't listen to this advice and instead used half a ton of explosives.<\/p>

With news reporters at the scene the story began to unfold, people were all stood a fair way back watching at a safe distance waiting in anticipation for the whale to blow up, then boom! A massive explosion is seen and then its only moments before you can hear the pitter patter and splat sounds as it starts to rain whale blubber. You can hear the commotion of the spectators running for cover as they're getting covered in bits of whale.<\/p>

Luckily no one was injured, however, one car in the carpark was written off as a huge piece of whale had come crashing down on it, this car belonged to the man who advised only to use a small amount of TNT.<\/p>

Honestly, you couldn't make it up, and I was laughing all the way through as they told the story on the radio.<\/p>

It was the following day I decided to track down the footage to see for myself, it was the shear absurdity of it all, plus the 1970's tones on the footage which then gave me inspiration to have a go at drawing it.<\/p>

On completion my wife walked into the room, not knowing anything of the story she said 'That's nice, what is it?' Her face was an absolute picture when I explained it was an exploding whale!<\/p>
